Collaboration between Federal Research Funding Organizations

CFI CIHR NSERC SSHRC

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) are working hard to improve the coordination of their programs, activities and policies. These organizations are committed to strengthening their joint efforts in order to address the knowledge, people and entrepreneurial advantages identified in the Federal S&T Strategy: Mobilizing Science and Technology to Canada's Advantage.

CIHR, NSERC and SSHRC support researchers in specific research areas (i.e., health, natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and humanities). The CFI complements the investments of the funding agencies through the provision of state-of-the-art infrastructure to research institutions. The funding organizations are responsible for a number of co-operative funding programs which contribute to Canada’s strong international reputation for the support of research excellence and training.

Adopting a more integrated approach to programs and client services helps reduce the administrative burden on researchers and institutions. It also enables the support of crosscutting, multidisciplinary research initiatives designed to address important scientific opportunities and problems that matter to Canadians.

This group has a number of long-standing interactions, and some more recent ones, that involve two, three or all four organizations. These include joint policies, funding programs, and formal and informal interactions among the Presidents and senior executives.
