The hallmark publication Geological History of Western Canada was conceived in 1960 and published in 1964, with later editions released in 1966 and 1970. Due to its popularity and coupled with improved geological understanding, work on a follow-up atlas started in 1985, with Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin published in 1994.

This was a monumental undertaking involving scores of scientists from government, industry, and academia. Over 20 Geological Survey of Canada staff contributed to the project, with data compiled from 146,000 Alberta wells and more than 50,000 other western Canada wells.

The Geological Atlas of the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin has proved to be a seminal and invaluable publication for geologists interested in mineral and hydrocarbon resources of Western Canada. It outlines basin formation before looking at a series of time slices throughout the basin, explaining stratigraphy, structure, geochemistry and geophysics in light of sea-level changes, plate tectonics, and thermal/organic maturity. Detailed resource estimates round out the volume.

The atlas is now out of print, but due to its continued relevance, it is still available for download from the Alberta Geological Survey.
