Hollywood has gotten the message - why no tan is THE look for summer 2017

We are seeing a bold, new natural look in Hollywood these days: no tan!

With Hollywood actors going with their own glow, everyone else is getting on board. So why is that?

Could be that they’ve gotten the message: tanning is unhealthy. Recent studies show that tanning beds are REALLY bad for you. Here are the facts:

  • The World Health Organization has classified tanning beds as a Group 1 carcinogen (which means it has been proven to cause cancer). That’s the same category as tobacco and asbestos!
  • In a Canadian survey, 62%* of tanning bed users say they used them to develop a ‘base tan’ to protect against sun burns. But here’s the thing… there is no such thing as a safe or healthy tan. A tan is a sign of skin damage, period.
  • If you use a tanning bed before you turn 35, you increase your risk of getting melanoma by almost 60%. What’s melanoma? Only the deadliest form of skin cancer.
  • It is estimated that 6,800 Canadians were diagnosed with melanoma in 2016 and 1,200 will die from it.
  • If you don’t use tanning beds properly, you could also burn your eyes or your skin. Long-term use of tanning beds could also lead to eye and skin diseases. 70% of tanning bed users in Canada are female, almost half of whom are between the ages of 18 and 34.

Hollywood actors have to think long term about their looks, and we all know that tanning makes you look way older than you actually are. Use a tanning bed or lay out in the sun too much and your skin will look damaged in no time.

If you want to avoid damaging your skin, try this while you’re out in the sun:

  • Check the UV index. If it’s over 3, get that sunscreen on.
  • Avoid the sun or cover up
  • Wear a hat when you can
  • Wear sunglasses that protect against UVA and UVB rays.

Put it all together and this new trend is full of benefits. We know we are on board!
